Google Reader Play spices up RSS feeds

Google Reader Play spices up RSS feeds

RSS feeds have pretty much remained the same way as when they first made it big, and reading all those feeds could prove to be a bore. Google intends to spice things up a bit with their new service known as Google Reader Play, where similar to Stumbleupon, it offers you an alternative method of browsing interesting news on the Internet. Items will be presented one at a time in Google Reader Play in a big format, taking up the entire screen. Once you have read it, click the next arrow to move on, and so on and so forth. Users might realize that Google Reader Play is based on the same technology found in Recommended Items in Google Reader, where it will automatically attempt to search the most popular stuff that appeals to you (as well as what turns you off), as long as you won't mind it "reading" into your mind initially.

Onda VX550 portable media player

Onda VX550 portable media player

Onda has unveiled its latest VX550 portable media player which sports a display that is larger than what one would normally get, which is a 5" screen at 800 x 480 resolution. While it can't show 1080p videos in its full glory, the device can still output it over to a Full HD TV thanks to its HDMI port. You can also hook up a USB device to this for quick file transfer and viewing. Supported video formats include RM/RMVB, MKV (H.264), AVI, MOV, FLV, MPG, VOB, DAT and TS. No idea on pricing or availability, although we suspect the former is going to cost a pretty penny.

Etirement Lamp

Etirement Lamp

Check out the Etirement Lamp that comes equipped with a dimmer, although it works differently since it is composed of both a skin as well as a skeleton. All you need to do is pull the rod which you see in the center in order to adjust the level of intensity. The level of the light's intensity can be raised or lowered according to the distortion of the fabric membrane. According to the Etirement Lamp's designer, RĂ©mi Bouhaniche, he sees the temporary, changing shape of the Etirement “a poetic time from a daily action.” Neat, but I must say that the temptation is there to just poke a hole through the membrane simply because I can.

JooJoo Tablet Gets A New User Interface And Color Before Launch

JooJoo Tablet Gets A New User Interface And Color Before Launch

While the shipping delay for the JooJoo tablet isn’t ideal, some additional information has surfaced in the meantime, which should keep you going until March 25th. The most interesting deal is that the interface of the device has been updated, and you have to admit, it currently looks a lot nicer than the original interface. Aside from the user interface, another notable difference is color of the casing, which is now a champagne color instead of the original black. Fortunately for users who are very conscious of the color of their devices, the preorder customers who are unhappy with the color can have their $499 refunded if they demand it. We’re certainly looking forward to see how the JooJoo tablet will fare amongst the recent onslaught of tablet devices in the market.

Rock Your Firefox Blog

Rock Your Firefox Blog

[SXSW] Yesterday, Mozilla launched its new blog “Rock Your Firefox”, featuring the coolest add-ons for Firefox, the popular open source browser. The first post featured Yoono, a social networking site aggregator and management tool that lets people chat or update their status in various social websites, and this, from the Firefox sidebar while they browse the web. The latest version (7.1) was released last month. I have not used Yoono in a while, it might now do the same job as Hootsuite in a smaller space (from the side bar instead of using the whole browser window); well, I have to check it. The second post  features Xsticky, a virtual sticky note add-on that lets you jot down thoughts and put them over any web page. Rock Your Firefox will be a good online information center to discover new adds-on quickly.

Cisco preps new Flip cameras

Cisco preps new Flip cameras

The Flip camera is meant for those who are just starting to delve into the world of digital video recording, and word has it that Cisco will be rolling out a new Flip camera, although there is no word on specifications. We would definitely want to see more functionalities thrown into the Flip range, as it is way too basic for our tastes, even for an entry-level device.

Paper calendar takes the autumn route

Don't you just love autumn, with falling leaves and all? Well, check out this unique calendar that will merge analog, digital, nature and poetic function in a single device. Every single day in autumn will see one page off just like a leaf, thanks to a clever mechanism located at its top. Meant for a promotional tool for clients by leaf blower manufacturer Stihl, this is one idea worth looking into.

PlayStation Move Hands-On

PlayStation Move Hands-On

PlayStation owners, rejoice! Soon you will stop hearing "when are you getting a Wii?" from your friends and family. Sony has just announced the PlayStation Move at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco. Presented last year at E3 (in fanfare), it is now a real product that will be sold as a bundle (game+ EyeToy webcam + PS Move) for $100. If you add the secondary controller, and make that a set of two, the bill will fairly quickly. So, how is it?

iPhone 3.2 Beta SDK Hints At New Gestures

iPhone 3.2 Beta SDK Hints At New Gestures

Folks who are keen to dabble with Apple’s latest iPhone 3.2 Beta 4 SDK might be interested to check out some new gestures that have appeared in the gestures folder. Upon inspection, you’ll notice the 3Tap.plist and LongPress.plist files, which seem to indicate that the iPhone will get the triple tap and long press interaction methods. Can you imagine any scenario or app that would benefit from such additional interaction methods, or do you think that the gestures that the iPhone already has are good enough?

Will The Horror Flicks Of The Future Call Your Cell Phone?

Ever been in the movies to catch a horror flick, and halfway through the movie, in that moment of suspense, yell out “RUN!” or something similar? Obviously the person on screen couldn’t hear you (and as a result met a horrible end), but what if you could influence the person on screen? That’s what the folks behind Last Call are aiming to do with their interactive horror film. Audience members will be asked to supply their cell numbers before the movie, and at one point, a phone number is selected at random from the list, and will be called. Voice recognition software will then listen to the person’s commands and the story will unfold based on their instructions. Of course, instructions will most likely be the usual things like “run, stay, turn right” or something along those lines. Trying to get the character to tap dance or sing the national anthem probably won’t work. It’s a cool concept, and will be interesting to see how it’s implemented. What would happen if the person left his phone on silent, and didn’t pick up, though?

Motorola And Microsoft Strike A Deal To Put Bing On Cell Phones

Motorola And Microsoft Strike A Deal To Put Bing On Cell Phones

Oh the irony of some things. The folks over at Google certainly aren’t going to be too amused to hear that Motorola has just struck up a deal with Microsoft that will see Bing search and mapping services come standard on Motorola’s phones that are powered by Google’s Android OS. In short, there will be a Bing bookmark and search widget loaded by default on your cell phone, starting with Motorola’s phones in China. This might be related to Google’s dispute with the Chinese government, not to mention the possibility that Google might be pulling out of the Chinese market. This news continues the recent trend of setting other search engines are the default on Google’s Android, such as the deal between AT&T and Motorola for the Backflip.
